Glenn Highway, Part 2

Continuing on the Glenn Highway from the Matanuska Glacier we come to Sheep Mountain overlook. On the way we pass the remains of an old volcano that is shaped like the Sphinx.
Sheep Mountain
The colors are from minerals in the rock.

We looked for Dall sheep.
But they must have been on the other side of the mountain.
Driving on, The "Sphinx" is reflected behind Birdie in my rear-view mirror.
The road levels out on a high plateau.
Shades of the Chugach Mountains to the south.

As we near the intersection of the Glenn and Richardson Highways the Wrangell mountains become visible.

This is Mount Drum as it looms in front of us.
We stopped at the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park Visitor Center in Copper Center for information on traveling to McCarthy and Kennicott...old mining towns in the park. They have a scenic viewpoint of the mountains there.
The view from there.
We decided to drive down the paved Edgerton to Kenny Lake and park our RVs at the Mercantile RV park. Then tomorrow we will take a shuttle over the 60-mile gravel road to McCarthy and Kennicott. The McCarthy Road is one of only two roads into the National Park. In the next post I'll report about that adventure.
